What the calculator is actually doing
There is no proprietary formula here, and nothing about the arithmetic is specific to Spatrian. It is the same calculation an evaluator does by hand.
- Count the documented hours Only instruction you can evidence counts. Hours logged as they happen are worth more than hours remembered in April.
- Divide by the hours per credit Most states use the 120-hour Carnegie default. Nine publish their own PE figure, and the calculator says which basis it used.
- Project forward at your weekly pace Hours already logged plus the pace you set gives the date each milestone is reached, inside a standard school year.
Your state may say something different
Hours-per-credit is only one of the things a state has an opinion about. Some set an annual PE expectation, some ask for a portfolio at review, and some ask for nothing at all. The state checker reports what yours requires, and the state guides go through them one by one. The hours only count if somebody wrote them down
Spatrian logs each finished lesson as dated instructional time, converts it to credit using the figure above, and prints the formula on the transcript so the arithmetic is checkable rather than asserted.
Confirm before you rely on this. Credit requirements are set by your state and, where you use one, your umbrella school — and they change. This calculator is a planning tool, not a ruling on what your state will accept. Spatrian does not award credits or diplomas; you do, as the home educator.
