Carnegie Unit & Credit Hour Standards

A high school credit is traditionally defined as 120–180 hours of total instructional work over a 36-week academic year. States differ on the figure they actually use: of the 55 jurisdictions we hold, most set 120 hours per credit, with a handful at 108, 135 or 140. Your state's own figure is on its card above — a half credit follows from it.

Portfolio Documentation Requirements

In portfolio-review states (PA, FL, MD, etc.), parents must demonstrate "regular, thorough instruction" through physical evidence. A sports program must output:

  • Skill Progression Evidence — tactical reviews, spatial analysis, nutrition/health quizzes
  • Performance Reports — analytics, metrics, and evaluations as "work samples"

Umbrella & Cover School Support

Many states allow homeschool families to operate under an "umbrella" or "cover school," which supervises records and issues transcripts.

Florida

Registered private umbrella schools supervise records and issue transcripts. Season completion certificates are accepted.

Tennessee

Church-related schools (Category IV) supervise parent-teachers and set their own PE credit requirement.

Maryland

Option B nonpublic entities review portfolios on a recurring schedule rather than leaving records with the district.

Alabama

Private/church school enrollment. Must include a "program of physical education" — a structured syllabus is expected at review.
